Data show huge gap in consumption of reggae versus dancehall music

Statistics from World Music Views indicate that there is a huge gap in the consumption of reggae versus dancehall music in Jamaica.

A Sunday Gleaner report says the data show that Jamaicans prefer to listen to dancehall music as artistes from that genre dominate the top 20 list for YouTube's most streamed artiste of 2018.

Chronixx is the only reggae artiste to be represented on the list, coming in at number 12 with 7.33 million streams on the digital platform over the past 12 months.

Incarcerated deejay Vybz Kartel tops the list with 25.4 million streams.

Alkaline with 25.3 million, Popcaan - 19.4 million, Masicka - 15.2 million, and Rygin King - 11.1 million, round out the top-five most streamed artistes in Jamaica for 2018.

While dancehall artistes continue to enjoy favour among local listeners, streaming numbers outside of Jamaica show that reggae is the ruler as local dancehall acts are having difficulty converting that dominance into international appeal.
