China, US to hold lower-level trade talks

China and the United States will hold lower-level trade talks this month, offering hope that they might resolve an escalating tariff war that threatens to engulf all trade between the world's two largest economies.

A Chinese delegation led by Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen will meet U.S. representatives led by David Malpass, Treasury Under Secretary for International Affair.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the talks in Washington would take place on August 21 and 22, just before $16 billion in new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods take effect, along with an equal amount of retaliatory tariffs from Beijing.
