Dolsie Allen, Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC), says the Consumer Protection Act is due to be updated.
Speaking at a recent JIS Think Tank, Mrs. Allen said this has become necessary due to new consumer purchasing trends.
She said a review of clauses in the Consumer Protection Act is underway, adding that the CARICOM 'Model Consumer Protection Bill' speaks to e-commerce and product safety, which should be included in Jamaica's Consumer Protection Act.
Meanwhile, Senior Public Relations Specialist at the CAC, Dorothy Campbell, said the consumer protection guidelines under the United Nations have broadened the scope of the Commission's duties.
She said the Consumer Affairs Commission's duties are no longer simply on a reactive basis where it seeks protection for consumers after they have made a complaint.
