Cybercrime crime remains a challenge to law enforcers - Bunting

Data show the authorities have been investigating a large number of bank card fraud cases since the start of the year. The Cybercrime Unit in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on Monday disclosed that there have been 88 cases of third-party debit and credit card fraud since January. The information was released during a University of the West Indies (UWI) conference on cybercrimes.

Peter Bunting, Minister of National Security, who addressed the conference, said cybercrimes continue to present a range of challenges to local law enforcers, particularly as it pertains to prosecution. He noted that in the internet age, geographical borders have disappeared and attacks may be from anywhere in the world. Mr. Bunting noted that in some instances when an account is hacked in Jamaica, it is done from a site or an email address overseas.

The Minister noted that even if there is co-operation from overseas law enforcement it is still difficult to prosecute in Jamaica's jurisdiction.
