The Jamaican Government has reiterated that it is focused on getting farmers to cultivate an additional 140 hectares of onions this year.
The push is part of the move to make Jamaica 40 per cent self-sufficient in the condiment by 2020.
Jamaica currently satisfies just over 12 per cent of its onion demand. That is up from 7 per cent in 2013.
However, as the country pushes to triple onion production in the next four years, the government says it will also be helping farmers to boost output per hectare. Currently, most farmers reap 12 tonnes of onions but the aim is to boost that by 25 percent to 15 tonnes per hectare.
The project this year targets 250 farmers. It will also involve the establishment of marketing contracts and arrangements between farmers and buyers.
Jamaica consumes 10 million kilogrammes of onions annually.
