JCTU renews plan to survey impact of currency movement on cost of living

Helene Davis Whyte

In the wake of the recent slide in the value of the Jamaican dollar to the US currency, the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) has given an update on its plan to conduct an independent survey on the impact of currency movement on the cost of living.

"We were not very successful in completing that survey and so what we still continue to depend on are the official statistics. But... we accept the official statistics when they are bad and so, I suppose, we shall have to accept them when they are good, unless we can actually counter them," said JCTU President Helene Davis Whyte.

Mrs Whyte said the union will continue "to do the monitoring" to ensure its members are not disadvantaged by the sliding dollar as a result of them accepting the current four-year agreement.
