Number portability operator granted licence

Jamaica is one step closer to having number portability.

Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell on Thursday granted a Number Portability Administrator licence to Netherlands-based Porting Access B.V. The licence will take effect on March 16 and is for 10 years.

A statement from the Technology Ministry said the licence has been granted for the company to establish, operate, manage, coordinate and maintain a number portability central reference database.

It will also operate an automated central order handling system and related activities for number portability.
A May 31 deadline has been set for the implementation of  number portability, which will allow Jamaicans to keep their assigned cell numbers if  they choose to switch mobile service provider.
