Listed company Sweet River Abbatoir and Supplies is reporting that small and medium sized pig farmers are not benefiting from increased tourist arrivals to the island.
In its unaudited financial report for the quarter ending March 31, the company said it purchased pigs from about 300 small and medium sized farmers however, pork sales declined 26 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The company says this was compounded by a 4 percent increase in operating expenses while selling prices remained unchanged.
Sweet Abbattoir noted that the absence of current data prevents it from charting a sustainable development plan in keeping with changes in supply and demand.
The company says the last pig survey conducted in Jamaica was in June 2012.
