Jamaica is closer to having a Data Protection Act.
This Bill was tabled by Technology Minister Dr. Andrew Wheatley in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The legislation will safeguard the privacy of individuals in relation to personal data, as well as govern the collection, regulation, processing, keeping, use and disclosure of certain information in physical or electronic form.
The decision was made to enact legislation in order to secure the confidentiality of personal data that may be in the possession of entities including government authorities.
The Bill also provides for the establishment of an Information Commissioner.
The individual will be responsible for overseeing the manner in which personal information in the possession of those entities is handled.
