Blue Lagoon to be declared national monument

The Blue Lagoon in Portland is to be declared a National Monument, following Cabinet’s approval of the move under the provisions of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust Act.

The disclosure was made by Minister with responsibility for the Public Service and Information, Senator Hon. Arthur Williams, during a recent press brieing at Jamaica House.
Mr. Williams said the designation will regulate the use of pollutants and motorised equipment in the designated area around the lagoon, as well as prohibit dredging and other activities that may be adverse to the ecology of the area.
He said there are a number of things that have to be done prior to the designation and “accordingly, because it will take some time, Cabinet has approved the introduction of a preservation notice for a period of six months to allow the National Heritage Trust to do all that is necessary to declare it a national monument.”

Blue Lagoon is one of the most famous spots in the parish of Portland. The lagoon is believed to be bottomless .
