2013/2014 sugar crop gains momentum

After a slow start to the 2013/2014 crop, the Sugar Association of the Caribbean (SAC), is reporting that the crop gained momentum during March, largely because of improved weather conditions.Jamaica led the way in regional sugar production in March with 37,990 tonnes.

It was followed closely by Guyana with 37,794 tonnes. Belize recorded production of 23,767 tonnes and Barbados totaled 1,788 tonnes.

The SAC says for the current crop, the region has supplied 151,527 tonnes of sugar to the European Union; 5,570 tonnes to the Caribbean market and 2,552 tonnes to other markets.

Rain had delayed the start of the crop in Barbados and Belize and interrupted production in Jamaica and Guyana.

However, the SAC  noted that since then, with improved weather, all four industries are now in production and productivity has improved.

SAC Chairman, Karl James noted that all indications suggest this will be a challenging year for the Caribbean Sugar Producers.
