300 children awaiting surgery at Bustamante Hospital

There are 300 patients awaiting cardiac surgery at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Sancia Templer, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, says the building to facilitate the cardiac centre at the hospital is ready and surgery will begin later this year.

At Wednesday's meeting of Parliament's Public Administration and Appropriations Committee, Ms Templer said there has been a delay in the start of operations at the Cardiac Centre. She did not provide a reason for the delay.

However, she said there have been missions coming to Jamaica to carrying out some surgeries, while a number of critical patients have been sent abroad to the Cayman Islands for care.

"But that's no excuse for the fact that we still have 300 cases awaiting surgery. The good thing is that we are now at the point where by October, November, those surgeries will commence here in Jamaica," she declared.
