Agriculture Ministry awaiting report on losses due to flood rains

J.C. Hutchinson

The Ministry of Agriculture is to receive a detailed report from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) on the losses suffered by farmers in the wake of the heavy rains in the last few weeks.

In an interview with RJR News on Monday morning, J.C. Hutchinson, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Agriculture, said several farmers were hard hit by the rains.

Mr. Hutchinson said he has already received preliminary reports on the damage suffered by farmers in Portland, which was affected by heavy rains last week.

"Just this morning, I was with one of the extension officers and he did mention to me that there are a number of famers that were affected, but it's a small amount with some cash crops and banana, plaintain and so forth," he outlined.

Mr. Hutchinson said the Ministry of Agriculture will be providing assistance to the affected farmers in Portland as well other affected areas as soon the ministry receives those reports.

The minister has confirmed that there will be an increase in the prices of agricultural produce due to the rains. However, he does not believe the price adjustments will be significant.

"The increase would depend on the supply that is available, so we have to await the report to find out what the damage is like," he said.
