Alleged August Town 'area leader' freed of anti-gang charges

George Ellis, an alleged "area leader" in August Town, St. Andrew, was on Friday freed of anti-gang charges.

Mr. Ellis was freed after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) indicated that she was not continuing with the case at this time.

Unfortunate

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has said it has taken note of  what it describes as the unfortunate development in the case against Mr. Ellis.

A news release from the JCF's Corporate Communications Unit Friday afternoon said despite investigative work by the police, the Director of Public Prosecutions had no choice but to enter a nolle prosequi.

It said this came about as a result of the murder of the prosecution's key witness in 2017.

The JCF said every effort was made by the police to have the individual placed under the Witness Protection Programme.

However, it said the individual declined police protection.

The release said the police have taken persons into custody for the murder of the witness and laid charges against them.
