The police have been forced to take strong action in Marverly in St. Andrew due to a flare-up in gang related violence.

Amid a worsening gang feud, the police have imposed a temporary ban on social events in the area.

In addition, the police were in the community on Monday informing businesses to shut their doors by 7:00 p.m.

Superintendent Arthur Brown, head of the St. Andrew South Police, said the measures are aimed at saving lives due to tension between warring factions.

"We have some gang feud between men from the bottom of Marverly and the top of Marverly, which resulted in murders and shootings," he said.

He noted that the most recent incident occured today, when a man, a resident of bottom Marverly, was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Superintendent Brown outlined that in addition, a strong police presence will be maintained in the community until the threat level is lifted.

Andrew Harris, Councillor for the Marverly Division, said the flare up in violence in the last two weeks has shattered eight years of peace in the community.

The police have reported that 257 criminal gangs are now operating in Jamaica.

Police intelligence estimates that an additional 41 groups are on the verge of becoming gangs.

There are also about 50 school gangs.
