Bermuda's Education Commissioner Kalmar Richards has called for the teachers' union to halt further industrial action after a mass sick-out closed government schools across the island on Monday.
Mr. Richards urged the Bermuda Union of Teachers to ask members to return to schools on Tuesday.
He said the government is ready to re-engage with the union through the Labour Relations Office.
Mr. Richards said a new standards-based grading system had been the main concern raised by the union in recent months.
The union's president Shannon James said teachers are confused about the system.
