Teachers at 22 bursar paid schools on Wednesday staged sit-ins to protest the failure of the Ministry of Education to pay salary arrears.
The affected schools are in Kingston, Manchester and St. Catherine
President of the Jamaica Teachers' Association, Doran Dixon, said he supports the action of the teachers and is resisting calling industrial action.
Dixon who has accused the Ministry of Education of being incompetent said the teachers have been given several payment deadlines due to the audit of schools, however he said they are now tired of the promises.
A statement from the Education Ministry last week said it is working along with the Ministry of Finance to complete the verification process and payment of all salary arrears by the end of this month.
The bulk of the outstanding payments from the 2007-2008 Heads of Agreement, has been already paid to the majority of the island’s 24,000 public sector teachers.
On Wednesday morning, an official from the Ministry told RJR News that efforts are being made to complete the audit of the schools.
He said the Ministry has every intention of meeting Friday's payment deadline.
