Businesswoman acquitted of murder

A 29 year old businesswoman was acquitted of murder before the Home Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon. Alicia Samuels was freed after the jury retired for one hour and returned a unanimous verdict.

She was placed on trial for the 2007 murder of 20 year old Sherine McKnight.

Prosecutors led evidence that on the night of November 22, 2007, the women had a dispute outside a nightclub in New Kingston. During the dispute, Ms McKnight was stabbed several times and died later in hospital.

In her defence, Ms Samuels, who was represented by attorney Peter Champagnie, claimed she was acting in self-defence.

She testified that she was stabbed in the back with a broken bottle by the deceased and this led to the two engaging in a tussle.

Ms Samuels was tried for the murder in 2010, but the jury was unable to arrive at a verdict, leading to a retrial.
