Jamaica's district constables have moved a step closer to being able to receive a pension from the government as Cabinet has approved the establishment of 2,200 district constable positions with effect from April 1 last year.
National Security Minister Robert Montague said this is a critical step to facilitate the payment of a pension to persons serving in those positions.
According to a release from the ministry, Cabinet has also approved the establishment of three levels of district constable for respective pay grades to be developed for the assignment of pension benefits.
The ministry said this is being done to prevent loss of retirement benefits for district constables close to retirement, and promote mobility within the organisation.
The startup date is to be determined.
