Jamaica's Cabinet has approved the tabling of a White Paper for the introduction of a National Identification System (NIDS) in Jamaica.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness is to lead the process.
According to Information Minister Senator Ruel Reid, the ID system is similar to the child passport which was developed to ensure that each child registered had adequate books, classrooms and teachers.
Cabinet has also given approval for legislation to expunge the records of National Heroes, notable freedom fighters and supporters.
The draft bill will be considered by Cabinet's legislation committee and then tabled in Parliament.
