Call for repairs to lock-up following escape attempt

An urgent call is being made for repairs to the lock-up at the Hundred Man Police Station in Portmore in the central parish of St. Catherine.

This follows Monday’s attempted escape by several prisoners, including murder suspects, at the facility.

A police source says the lock-up was constructed for the detention of  suspects on a short-term basis. However, the inmate population is said to be double the capacity, resulting in overcrowding.

According to the source, the dilapidated state of  the cell block is a major cause for concern for police personnel assigned to the facility.

When contacted Operations Officer for the St. Catherine South Police Division, Leon Clunis, declined to comment on the matter.

He said Monday’s thwarted escape is being investigated.
