Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has warned municipal corporations that their lax approach to development approval will not be allowed to continue.
Speaking at a sitting of the St. James Municipal Corporation this week, Mr. McKenzie stated that there is widespread neglect of due process by corporations when dealing with construction projects.
"You have an obligation to ensure that everything that you do is done in accordance with the laws that governs how you operate," he told the sitting.
Mr. McKenzie said weak supervision has resulted in repairs having to be made to more than 100 buildings constructed by the National Housing Trust (NHT).
However, the has made it clear to the agency that the corporations will not sanction repairs until they are satisfied that the repairs are achievable, that there is adequate funding to complete the undertaking and that there are mechanisms in place to ensure the buildings are maintained.
