Cement Company workers back on the job

Employees at Caribbean Cement's Rockfort plant in Kingston returned to work on Saturday morning, one day after they went on strike over conditions of work and wage negotiations.

The Ministry of Labour held a meeting on Friday afternoon with unions representing the workers as well as Carib Cement's management.

The workers are dissatisfied with the company’s wage offer of seven per cent over two years. There were also allegations that a senior manager offered an additional five per cent to workers who are willing to have their positions made redundant without their union’s knowledge.

Granville Valentine, General Secretary of the National Workers Union, told RJR News that the parties will hold further discussions in another week.

Logos Hope

With the workers back on the job, Logos Hope, the world’s largest floating book fair, which is currently docked at the Cement Company’s pier at Rockfort, has reopened.

It was closed on Friday, due to the industrial unrest.

The access gate to the ship was closed, preventing members of the public from entering the vessel to purchase books.
