China to build 220 bed children's hospital in St. James

An agreement has been signed for the Government of  China to provide US$36.1 million in grant funding to build  the long planned Western Children's Hospital in St. James.

The 220-bed facility will be constructed on the expansive compound of the Cornwall Regional Hospital at Mount Salem, Montego Bay.

Construction is expected to commence by the end of  the current fiscal year.

The facility will significantly boost the health sector's capacity by providing specialist medical care for youngsters up to age 18.

Funding is being provided under an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement, which was signed on Thursday at the Ministry of  Foreign Affairs.

The project, conceptualised under the administration of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, was carried forward by the current government led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
