Clash of Parliamentary committees derails Opposition's plan for enquiry into FLA operations

Everald Warmington and Karl Samuda

A decision to have the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) of Parliament consider the first Supplementary Estimates of Expenditure has derailed plans by the Opposition to have another committee enquire into the operations of the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA).

Parliament's Internal and External Committee was set to quiz representatives of the FLA next week Tuesday morning.

However, with the Supplementary Estimates tabled Tuesday afternoon in the House of Representatives, House Leader Karl Samuda said the PAAC would meet at 10 o'clock next Tuesday to go over the numbers.

When the Opposition highlighted the clash, government MP Everald Warmington dismissed the concern, noting that although the Internal and External Committee is scheduled to meet next Tuesday, no item was referred to the committee by the House, which the Standing Order specifies should be done.

Phillip Paulwell, Leader of Opposition Business in the House, said the matter should be discussed and a compromise reached.

However, Mr. Samuda insisted the meeting would go on even if  Opposition members do not attend.
