Com Pol: No more than two zones of special operation at any given time

Police Commissioner George Quallo is seeking to assure the public that no more than two Zones of  Special Operations will be declared at any given time. This is in response to concerns about the potential for widespread human rights abuse.

The newly implemented Zones of  Special Operations Law allows a declaration to be made for an area where security personnel can establish a presence for extended periods and have certain powers.

Speaking at a Rotary Club meeting in Kingston on Thursday, Mr Quallo stated that with the existing constraints on resources, it would be pointless to take on a large number of communities at once. He explained that he expects the activities inside these zones to be labour intensive in the initial phase.

In the meantime, the Commissioner confirmed that no decision has been made on which communities will be targeted first under the Zones of  Special Operations legislation. He explained that the focus, for now, is to continue managing hot spots across the island, especially in western Jamaica.

He declined to comment on specific measures to be taken in Denham Town which has been plagued by gun violence in recent days.
