Commerce Minister urges compliance with new sugar labelling requirements

Karl Samuda

Ahead of the July 1 implementation of standards for the labelling and packaging of sugar, Commerce Minister Karl Samuda, has warned that strong action will be taken against those who do not conform with the law.

The new labelling, packaging and food safety requirements will be mandatory for pre-packaged brown and granulated sugar in the retail trade.

Speaking at a media briefing at his ministry on Friday morning, Mr. Samuda said the standards will serve as a disincentive for manufacturers who import sugar as raw material but divert it to the local trade.

Under the new regulations, only approved entities will be allowed to buy and sell bulk sugar packaged in 50 kilogramme bags.

Only registered entities will be allowed to repackage sugar in smaller bags.

Entities found in breach will have their products confiscated.

The Commerce Minister also wants a fine to be imposed those who are non-compliant "because it is the only thing, in most cases (that) people respect."

The brand name, net content, country of origin as well as the name and address of the manufacturer will be printed on the labels.

Mr. Samuda has urged consumers not to buy improperly packaged and labelled sugar when the new standards are implemented.

The Consumers Affairs Commission has been directed to exercise increased vigilance in the marketplace as it relates to packaged sugar.
