Cop arrested at Norman Manley International Airport

A policeman, who is a main suspect in a 'death squad' investigation in Jamaica, is now in custody after being nabbed late Wednesday night at Norman Manley International Airport.

A team from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), assisted by the Bureau of  Special Investigations, arrested and charged Constable Whitney Hutchinson with the May 5, 2011 murder of  Sylvester Gallimore, and assault occasioning bodily harm of  another civilian.

Constable Gallimore, who is attached to the May Pen Police Station and was away in Canada, was held about 11 o'clock.  He will remain in custody until he faces the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow.

INDECOM had issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of  Mr. Gallimore, otherwise called "Seven Belly", in Clarendon.

It was reported that the Constable left the island on June 23 this year without informing his superiors.

Mr. Gallimore, who was a member of  a York Town criminal gang, was reportedly killed in a shoot-out with the police.

He was also under investigation after death threats were issued to a senior magistrate at Half-Way-Tree Court, following the sentencing of a Clarendon businessman for customs fraud.
