Cops facing criminal charges to be removed from operational duties

Action has been taken after the Independent Commission of  Investigations (INDECOM) raised concern that a policeman who was the subject of  a murder probe was still on front-line duty.

INDECOM has been informed by the Police High Command that directives have been given to Divisional Commanders for all members of the Force who are the subject of  criminal charges by the agency to be removed from operational duties.

The agency raised concern after a policeman who is under investigation for a murder in May 2016 was involved in an incident in which a man was shot last week on Riverside Drive in Kingston.

A warrant for a murder charge has been prepared for the cop.

According to INDECOM, the execution of  the warrant for the policeman to be arrested and charged was delayed as he is seeking Judicial Review.

The statement from INDECOM said it repeatedly reminded the Jamaica Constabulary Force that it is inappropriate to have an officer who is suspected of  or will be charged with a criminal offence to be on front line duty.
