Cornwall College teachers protest

Some students at Cornwall College in Montgeo Bay St James left alone as more than half of the 60 teachers left the classroom, picked up placards to register their rejection of the five percent wage offer.

The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) representative at the school said the protest was held before Thursday’s meeting between the JTA and the government.

Meanwhile the National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) is concerned about the uncertainty hanging over the education system as a result of negotiations between the Government of Jamaica and the JTA.

President of the NPTAJ, Everton Hannam says the association is also concerned about the possible disruptions to class time.

He says the association is in support of the efforts by all public sector workers, including teachers, for a just and reasonable wage claim.

However, Hannam says the association cannot support any disruption to the already limited contact days between student and teachers in the education system.
