Correctional officers at Metcalfe Street halt work over unpaid fees

Aston Johnson, Senior Negotiating Officer at the UAWU

Correctional officers at Metcalfe Street Secure Juvenile Remand Centre refused to work on Monday morning, demanding that allowances due to them, be paid.

They want answers on when payment will be made.

Aston Johnson, Senior Negotiating Officer at the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU), told RJR News that the department which is responsible for paying the workers is questioning the address of some of the employees.

He said the union advised the department go ahead and conduct a verification exercise so that the workers can be paid.

However, the workers are upset because they have not seen forthcoming payments.

They have decided to halt their duties until someone from the department meets with them.
