Correctional Services given 48 hours to report on breaches

Pearnel Charles Jr., Minister of State, Ministry of National Security

Jamaica's Department of Correctional Services has been given 48 hours to prepare a report outlining all the issues facing the system, including allegations of unauthorised recordings by inmates.

Pearnel Charles Jr., Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, issued the order on Tuesday.

The move followed the announcement of several measures aimed at increasing security at penal facilities.

This was in reaction to widespread reports that some inmates, including the dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel (real name Adidja Palmer) were recording music without authorization.

Mr Charles, speaking later on RJR's current affairs show, Beyond the Headlines, said his request for a report is to address the wider issue of breaches of rules, rather than a specific reaction to the Vybz Kartel issue.

Among the security measures to be implemented are the installation of X-Ray scanning machines, the use of metal detectors and entry management protocols.
