Customs Officer convicted for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

A Customs Officer was yesterday convicted in the Corporate Area Criminal Court for breaches of  the Corruption Prevention Act. Twenty-nine year old Michael Shaw will be sentenced on July 8.

In February last year, a Jamaican, who is a resident of  the US, arrived in the island when it was discovered that there were discrepancies in relation to money in his possession that should have been declared on some of his documents.

The money was confiscated and he was taken by Shaw to an office at Norman Manley International Airport, where he was questioned by a supervising Officer. The visitor proved that he obtained the money by legitimate means, and Shaw was ordered to release the man and return the money. According to a statement from MOCA, Shaw corruptly solicited US$1,400 and accepted US$2,000 from the man.

A report was filed with the Anti-Corruption Branch. A file was sent to the Office of the Director of  Public Prosecutions who ruled that Shaw be charged.
