Customs working to prevent ASYCUDA disruption in holiday period

Velma Ricketts Walker, Commissioner of Jamaica Customs

Velma Ricketts Walker, Commissioner of Jamaica Customs, has said the agency is working to minimize disruptions in the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) over the busy holiday period.

The computerized system has malfunctioned on a number of  occasions since full implementation last year.

The most recent was a two-day breakdown just days before the Easter weekend, which caused major disruptions in the processing and clearance of shipments.

The delays caused massive losses for customs brokers and freight forwarders.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday, Mrs. Ricketts Walker said with the festive season just weeks away several international experts are in Jamaica to help iron out glitches in the system.

In addition, Mrs. Ricketts Walker said a back up system will be in place in the event of a malfunction of ASYCUDA.

ASYCUDA is a web-based application that allows clients of Jamaica Customs to undertake e-transactions.
