Dean Jones to again represent JLP when by-election called for Yallahs division - Robertson

James Robertson, Member of Parliament for St. Thomas Western

James Robertson, Member of Parliament for St. Thomas Western, has said Dean Jones will again represent the Jamaica Labour Party when a by-election is called for the Yallahs division.

He was responding to Tuesday morning's ruling in the Supreme Court that Mr. Jones is not eligible to sit in the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.

Chief Justice Bryan Sykes found that Mr. Jones was employed as a civil servant at the time of his election in the November 2016 Local Government polls.

Mr. Robertson is expressing confidence that Mr. Jones will again win the division for the JLP.

"It's a very complicated matter which does no harm to Mr. Jones at this point because he will run again and will win three to one," he purported.

"We believe in democracy, we believe in going to the people at all times for their decision, and the judge did speak to that. Mr. Jones had been properly nominated in the eyes of the people and had won a decisive victory at that time and will continue to be a winner," asserted Mr. Robertson.

There was a five-five tie between the People's National Party and the JLP in the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation.

PNP gets legal advise

The People's National Party (PNP), in the meantime, is consulting with its legal team to determine if it will file an appeal of the court's ruling that a by-election should be called in the Yallahs division.

A release from the party Tuesday afternoon said it strongly believes the court should have awarded the seat directly to its candidate, Constantine Bogle.

PNP General Secretary Julian Robinson said the JLP's Dean Jones misled the Electoral Office of Jamaica and, therefore, only Mr. Bogle was properly nominated.
