Debates Commission awaits PNP response on Monday

The People's National Party (PNP) has given a commitment to respond to a request of the Jamaica Debates Commission (JDC) to reconsider its position on participating in the three proposed debates.

The Commission, in a statement on Saturday, said it was encouraged by the undertaking of PNP General Secretary, Paul Burke, to respond to the Commission on Monday.

The JDC had written to the PNP on Friday, advising that it was no longer able to commit to organizing and staging the first in a series of  political debates between the PNP and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) on Tuesday February 16.
It said it had not received a response from the Party up to that point and therefore had run out of time to adequately prepare for the Tuesday debate.

The JDC, in that letter, said it was nevertheless still willing to stage the debates, if both parties were in agreement on the dates.

PNP Campaign Director Dr Peter Phillips said on Friday that the Party would not participate in the debates, until JLP Leader Andrew Holness apologises to PNP President Portia Simpson Miller and release financial statements and details on the development of  his house in Beverly Hills.
