"Deceptive budget" - says Shaw

A budget that is deceptive and does not balance the lives of Jamaicans is how the opposition Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP), spokesman on Finance Audley Shaw, has described the budget presented last week by Finance Minister, Dr Peter Phillips.

In Parliament on Tuesday, the opposition spokesman pointed to high government arrears .
Shaw said although the government has been bragging about passing International Monetary Fund (IMF) test it has failed miserably in passing many other tests.
He said despite several requests for information on government arrears they have not been forthcoming.
Shaw also pointed to what he said was J$47 billion in government arrears, singling out the Ministry of Health as being one of the ministries owing the most.

He added that the government is pretending to live within its means as the figures for arrears have not moved since last year.
Concerning the foreign exchange rate, Shaw said the devaluation of the Jamaican dollar has grave consequences contrary to what the Foreign Minister has stated.
