Defence attorneys resume closing arguments at Uchence gang trial

Defence attorneys on Wednesday resumed making closing submissions at the trial of accused gang leader Uchence Wilson and members of his criminal gang.

The attorneys urged Chief Justice Bryan Sykes to reject the testimonies of the two key State witnesses who were members of the gang.

They urged him to view the testimony of the men with suspicion and give the accused the benefit of the doubt.

The attorneys also argued that prosecutors have failed to prove a case against the accused as outlined in the indictment.

Six of the 24 accused who were on trial have been released.

The defendants are being tried under the anti-gang legislation.

Prosecutors reported that members of the gang were involved in armed robberies, shootings and rape in several parishes in 2015 and 2017.
