Dengue still a priority, Health Minister says even as cases steadily decline

Dr. Christopher Tufton

At the end of last month, there were 729 confirmed cases of dengue fever, and one death from the mosquito-borne disease in Jamaica.

The Ministry of Health recently declared the end of the dengue outbreak.

Since April, there has been a steady decline in cases, with no more than 10 reported monthly.

Speaking Thursday at a national meeting of the Vector Control Programme, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton gave a breakdown of the monthly figures, revealing there were 499 cases in January, 166 in February and 40 cases in March. In addition, there were two cases in April, ten in May, seven in June and five cases in July.

Dr. Tufton warned that the vector index has been increasing as more people have been storing water due to the dry conditions.

"So, however, you take it, we still have to maintain vigilance and control. So the Jamaican people need to also know, with the help of our media partners, that dengue is still a priority for us as Ministry as Health, still a priority for us as a country and as a people, and that we should take heed," he cautioned.
