The government is promising that a deposit refund scheme for plastic bottles will be fully operational early in the 2019/2020 fiscal year.
The scheme will be led by the private sector.
Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation Daryl Vaz made the announcement Tuesday in the House of Representatives.
He said this will be part of efforts to reduce plastic waste.
The Deposit Refund Scheme will involve the application of a deposit on plastic bottles placed on the market and a cash rebate to the consumer on the return of the bottles to designated redemption centres across the island.
This Scheme will be implemented by reinstituting the entity Recycling Partners Jamaica Limited.
Mr Vaz disclosed that participating members of the private sector have instituted a self-imposed cess of one dollar per bottle.
