With Saturday's deadline for commuters to apply for Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) Smarter Cards, the state-owned bus company is reporting a big jump in distribution of the cards.
JUTC Chairman, Reverend Dr. Garnet Roper, says commuters have been heeding the call to sign up.This follows last week's rush on card distribution centres.
“We have distributed 160,000 Smarter cards, the one downfall is that several students who purchased cards last year lost them, and they had to be replaced. We hope that trend does not continue…”
Roper added that the company will not offer further extensions for commuters to get cards.
He said, the company is encouraged by the increasing numbers of passengers using their cards.
The JUTC Chairman also noted that the company is examining ways to offer discounts to SmarterCard holders.
