Dominica to establish off-shore medical school

The Dominican government on Tuesday announced it had reached an agreement with a foreign entity to establish an off-shore medical school.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, delivering the 2019-20 national budget to Parliament, said the new facility would replace the US-owned Ross University that left the Caribbean island after 40 years.

It later emerged that the university had relocated to Barbados and began operations in January.

The university later defended its decision to relocate to Bridgetown saying it was made after considerable deliberations, including a review of its academic and infrastructural requirement as well as future plans.

Mr. Skerrit told legislators his administration had entered into an agreement with Dominica University School of Medical Sciences to allow it to operate.
