Dominica's December 6 election date to be tested in court today

Dominica’s High Court judge Justice Bernie Stephenson will today (Tuesday) rule whether the court has jurisdiction to hear an application to postpone the December 6 general election.

Justice Stephenson has already indicated that the matter will likely find its way before the Court of  Justice, which is Dominica's highest court.

The seven applicants in the case are arguing that the election should not be held until the names of ineligible voters are removed from the list and all objections filed before November 19 are dealt with, in accordance with the law.

In addition, they say voter identification cards must be issued only to eligible voters.

They have named the President of  Dominica, Charles Savarin, the Chief  Elections Officer, the Cabinet of  Dominica, the Attorney general, and the state-owned DBS radio as the respondents.
