Member of Parliament Fitz Jackson wants the Legislature to drop a provision in the new Road Traffic Bill, which, if passed, will impose a penalty on motorists who are not in possession of their driver's licence at the time they are stopped by the police.
Jackson, MP for South St. Catherine, made this appeal during debate on the bill in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The proposal in the bill is that a fine of J$1000 be imposed for failure produce the driver's licence upon request durng a stop.
While supporting, in general, the desire to "induce a culture of being properly identified," Mr. Jackson recommended that this particular provision "be revisited."
This provision has been causing concern for some other legislators and members of the public.
MPs, Andre Hylton and Karl Samuda also suggested that the speed limits specified in the statute be reconsidered.
