Education Minister vows to ensure action taken against teacher accused of beating student with PVC pipe

Senator Ruel Reid
Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid has said he will be ensuring that disciplinary proceedings are instituted against the Vere Technical High teacher charged with assaulting a student she allegedly beat with a PVC pipe.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing on Wednesday, Senator Reid noted that his ministry does not have the power to discipline the teacher.
He explained that teachers are not employed by the ministry but by school boards.
However, he said the ministry can ensure that the board carries out its duty to properly investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
"Already we have started by asking for a report from the principal. We'll follow up to ensure that the law and the procedure are followed," he declared.
The teacher is reportedly still at the school as, by law, a principal cannot suspend a teacher before due process.
"The principal would have to file the report to the board, the board will have to take the report, review and make a determination if there is a need for disciplinary action," Senator Reid explained.
He said the ministry will be carrying out its own investigation.
The teacher has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm by the Clarendon police.
