Entertainment promoters in Westmoreland protest withholding of permits

Entertainment promoters protested near the Westmoreland police station on Tuesday demanding the removal of the divisional head, Egbert Parkins.

They lined the streets and blocked traffic to vent their frustrations that their applications for permits to host entertainment events have been denied.

One of the promoters, said he made an appeal to the Police Commissioner's office but was again rejected.

The police have been trying to quell an upsurge in crime in Westmoreland. The police said they are cautious about approving permits for events that could attract violence given the recent flare up in the western section of the island.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Vaz, Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, said based on talks with the police, he does not believe there is an overall ban on entertainment events.

He said the police denied the permits, after considering the merit of each application.

However, Mr. Vaz said the parties are trying to strike a balance.

"So what is being suggested by some of the promoters is that they'll be having an official committee formed... and from this they can speak as one voice; they can try to have dialogue with the minister of national security, the minister of entertainment, along with the superintendent of police and we can sit and find a way to come to some solution," he asserted.

Mr. Vaz was speaking at the scene of Tuesday's protest.
