EOJ: Cleaning voters' list is costly and needs more than 6 months

The Electoral Office of  Jamaica (EoJ) is admitting that there is not much it can do at this time to fully address concerns about the Voters' List. It also agrees that a voter re-verification exercise is needed.

Audley Shaw, Deputy Leader of  the Jamaica Labour Party, on the weekend took the Simpson Miller administration to task over what he said was its failure to re-verify the list. He said the exercise was urgent, with a Local Government election due next year.

Director of  Elections, Orrette Fisher, says the EoJ has sources including the Registrar General's Department, returning officers and political representatives to supply the names of dead persons on the Voters' List. However, he told RJR News that more needs to be done. He said this would include a comprehensive canvass similar to what was done last year when over 20,000 names of dead persons were removed from the list.

In the meantime, the Director of  Elections said it was unlikely that a re-verification exercise will take place in time for an election early next year. He noted that it is an expensive venture and would take over a year to complete.

Local Government elections are due in six months.
