EU pumps funds into sugar transformation programme

The government has received additional financial support from the European Union (EU) for its sugar transformation programme. The Ministry of Agriculture and the EU have signed two contracts valued at almost J$90 million.

Roger Clarke, Minister of Agriculture, said one of the components of the Sugar Transformation Programme, which is being implemented by the Ministry, is the flood mitigation project. Work is expected to commence within the next two weeks.

The two contracts with the EU are also expected to enhance drainage at the proposed agro parks being established in the Plantain Gardens River Valley in St. Thomas.

Round-a-bout renamed

And the Agualta Vale round-a-bout in St. Mary was officially renamed Thursday. It is now known as the Schuman Roundabout in honour of Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of the European Union. The round-a-bout is the starting point of the section of the North Coast Highway which received 10 billion dollars in funding from the European Union.

The remaining 25 per cent of the cost was funded by the Government.

The road which is approximately 96 kilometres is the section of the Northern Coastal Highway between Ocho Rios and Port Antonio and links the parishes of St. Ann, St. Mary and Portland.

Through Cabinet approval, the round-a-bout was renamed on Europe Day in recognition of the EU's contribution to Jamaica and Mr. Schuman for his pioneering work towards a united Europe.
