Family of Jamaican man considers suing Barbados government

The family of a Jamaican man is contemplating a lawsuit against the Barbados Government for unlawful detention.

However, Barbados immigration authorities say they were not responsible for the delay in the departure of the man who has been identified as Kivesi McPherson.

His attorney, Asante Brathwaite, sought answers from the Immigration Department, after the Jamaican was detained for almost a week at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

Miss Brathwaite told Barbados Today that she is aware that her client committed an illegal act but should not be punished twice.

Miss Brathwaite explained that her client, who was arrested for importing $20,000 worth of cannabis on December 30, was convicted last Thursday, and paid the fine of $8,000.

The Jamaican was released into the custody of the Barbados Immigration Department as is customary.

The Immigration Department says it took several days to arrange Mr. McPherson's trip to Jamaica.
