Finance Minister denies shutting down wage talks with Police Federation

Dr. Nigel Clarke, Minister of Finance and the Public Service, is refuting claims by the Police Federation that he has closed the door on wage negotiations for the 2017-2019 contract period.

He says the Federation's claim on Monday in the media is a misrepresentation of the communication between the Ministry and the group, which represents rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

On Monday, the Federation said the Finance Ministry had written to it, saying Dr. Clarke would be unable to accede to its request to continue the negotiation process in good faith.

However, in a media release Tuesday, Dr. Clarke said the ministry advised that it was unable to convene a meeting within the time requested.

He said the ministry indicated it would communicate a date for continuation of the discussions.

Dr. Clarke said he will meet with the Federation following his return to Jamaica from official business Wednesday.
